Biography
Christchurch band Von Klap are releasing their debut album, "Dog", in October this year. The band, which has been playing around the country since mid 2007, formed with the aim of playing drinking music for drunks. Their style has been described as "funeral pop" and "carny prog" and generally runs in the vein of dark and grinding country music.
Originally called The Klap, the band was forced to change the name to Von Klap in 2009 because they were horrified to find out "the clap" was a slang term for venereal disease.
After an early life playing drunken house parties they recorded and self-released their first ep, "Now in Mono", touring to Wellington and Auckland in support of this. Gigging around Christchurch, they built up a loyal following and won RDU's Roundup 2008 competition.
Following this win, Von Klap have enjoyed continued high rotation on RDU and have cemented their reputation as Christchurch's favourite scumbags with continued live shows, which always include their notorious over-the-top stage show. The band have filmed and released videos for four of their songs, "Dying", "Screenplay", "Not Getting Younger" and "Water and Wine". The last of these videos is for the first single from "Dog" and the others are stand alone projects. All are available to view from the band's website.
During their short lifespan Von Klap have played with artists including The Bats, Delaney Davidson, Boss Christ, The Users and Cut Off Your Hands. They have played at major shows including SounDay, Southern Amp and The Black Keys, and have been the featured artist on The Chart Website.
Recording for "Dog" began in June 2009 at The Sitting Room studios in Christchurch, under the watchful and drunken eye of local Idiot Savant Ben Edwards (The Eastern, Unfaithful Ways).
he album is being self released in accordance with the band's DIY approach. Nationwide touring in support of the release of this album commences in October at Check's Hotel in Dunedin and will end with a visit to Auckland in January, with the band covering other spots in the country in between.
Von Klap are terribly interested in selling out, and are open to offers. Please get in touch if this interests you.
